Leadership
In order to prepare our students for the future and enable greatness in each of them, this year, our focus will be on the 7 habits of highly successful people. The 7 habits that Blackland Prairie are promoting are the ones that Steven Covey talks about in his book
The Leader in Me. These will be posted in the classroom and encouraged on a daily basis. Hopefully, you can find ways to practice these at home as well. Below is a very brief summary of each habit.
1. Habit #1: Be Proactive
You take initiative and choose your actions, attitudes and moods. You do not blame others for your wrong actions. You do the right thing without being asked,
even when no one is looking.
2. Habit #2: Begin with the end in mind/Have a plan
You plan ahead and set goals. You do things that have meaning and make a difference. You look for ways to be a good citizen.
3. Habit #3: Put first things first/Work first, then play
You spend your time on things that are most important.. You say no to things you should not do. You set priorities and make a schedule. You are disciplined and organized.
4. Habit #4: Think Win-Win/Everyone can win
You balance courage for getting what you want with consideration for what others want. You make deposits in other peoples' emotional bank accounts.
5. Habit #5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood/Listen before you talk
You listen to other peoples' ideas and feelings. You try to see things from their viewpoints. You listen without interrupting. You are confident in voicing your ideas, and you
look people in the eye when you are talking.
6. Habit #6: Synergize/Together is better
You value other peoples' strengths and learn from them. You get along well with others, even people who are different than you. You know that teaming with others will lead to
better solutions than alone. You are humble.
7. Habit #7: Sharpen the saw/Balance feels best
You take care of your body by eating right, exercising and getting sleep. You spend time with family and friends. You learn in lots of ways and lots of places. You find
meaningful ways to help others.
